3 Hürel - Bir Sevmek Bin Defa Ölmek Demekmiş

TRANSLATION

Aşkın şarabından bilmeden içtim
I blindly (lit. without knowing) drank the wine of love
Sevda yolundan bilmeden geçtim
I blindly passed through the path of love
Aşkın bir alevmiş yar yar, bir ateş parçası
Turns out your love is a flame, my love, a piece of fire
Bilmeden gönlümü ateşe verdim
I blindly set my heart on fire

Bir sevmek bin defa ölmek demekmiş
(Turns out) to love once means to die a thousand times
Bin defa ölüp de hiç ölmemekmiş
To die a thousand times and never to die
Bin defa ölüp de ölememekmiş
To die a thousand times and never being able to die

Şarabı zehirmiş içtikçe öldüm
(Turns out) the wine was poision, I died as I drank
Yolu hep uçurum düştükçe öldüm
The path was all abyss, I died as I fell
Askın bir alevmiş yar yar, bir ateş parçası
(Turns out) your love is a flame, my love, a piece of fire
Ateşe gönlümü yaktıkça öldüm
The more I burnt my heart the more I died

NOTES

This song includes one of the toughest suffixes to translate in Turkish, -(y)mIş, as it might indicate subtle differences depending on the context. It usually means that speaker is reporting second hand information:

Ali ölmüş. (I heard that / they say that) Ali died.

However, in the song it is implied that the unfortunate lover “comes to the realization and it turns out” that love is death, fire and all those torturous things.

Therefore, in the translation below, I made use of the verb “turns out” to try to give that sense of awakening and realization.
